If you were in Morris Plains on April 26, 1997, you might have noticed groups of men, women, and children walking along the highways and byways, reading from a yellow and blue booklet. It was the day of the first-ever Morris Plains Historical Walk. The weather was perfect, and well over 200 people took part in the event.

Bretton Woods, the former Canfield-Ferris-Laudig mansion, was the starting point for the walk. Manager Earl Freeman was the co-sponsor of the event, and he provided tours of Bretton Woods and a lovely breakfast spread to fortify the walkers.

Greeting the walkers at Bretton Woods were Morris Plains Museum members in historical dress. A welcome message was delivered by Mayor Frank Druetzler. There was beautiful music both inside the mansion and outside on the lawn thanks to various Morris Plains Borough School groups.

Other attractions at Bretton Woods included a mannequin dressed in museum member Helen Hildebrant Schnack's mother's turn-of-the-century wedding dress.

The Historical Walk was a self-guided tour. Walkers followed maps in the Morris Plains Historical Walk Booklet written by Virginia Vogt. Museum members George and Kay Rockefeller and their son Doug, made possible the reproduction and binding of the booklets at no cost to the museum. The walk booklet is currently for sale in the museum for $5.
